The Dream Stela of Thutmose IV | History of the Great Sphinx of Giza

The Dream Stela of Thutmose IV: The Sacred Vision at the Feet of the Great Sphinx

Discover the Ancient Story of Destiny and Divine Kingship in Giza

Standing majestically between the forepaws of the
Great Sphinx of Giza, the Dream Stela of King Thutmose IV is one of the most remarkable monuments from Egypt's New Kingdom. This extraordinary granite monument tells a fascinating story of divine intervention, royal destiny, and one of ancient Egypt's most famous legends.

If you're planning a visit to the Giza Plateau, the Dream Stela is a hidden treasure that offers visitors a deeper understanding of Egypt's rich history beyond the pyramids.

What Is the Dream Stela?

The Dream Stela is a pink granite monument measuring approximately 1.44 meters (4.7 feet) high, 70 centimeters (2.3 feet) wide, and 40 centimeters (1.3 feet) thick. It was commissioned by King Thutmose IV during the 18th Dynasty (around 1401 BC) and placed between the paws of the Great Sphinx.

Its hieroglyphic inscription records a legendary dream that, according to ancient Egyptian tradition, changed the future of a young prince and secured his place on the throne of Egypt.

The Legend of the Divine Dream

Before becoming pharaoh, Thutmose IV was a young prince who ventured onto the Giza Plateau during a hunting expedition. Exhausted by the desert heat, he sought shelter beneath the shadow of the Great Sphinx. At that time, centuries of drifting desert sand had buried almost the entire body of the Sphinx, leaving only its majestic head visible above the dunes.

As the prince slept, he experienced a powerful vision. In his dream, the Sphinx—identified with the sun god Harmakhis—spoke to him, saying that if he cleared away the sand surrounding the sacred monument, he would be rewarded with the crown of Egypt.

This divine promise became one of the most famous royal legends in Egyptian history.

The Restoration of the Great Sphinx

After ascending the throne, Thutmose IV fulfilled his promise. During the first year of his reign, he ordered the excavation and restoration of the Great Sphinx, removing the massive accumulation of desert sand that had engulfed the monument.

To commemorate this extraordinary event, he erected the Dream Stela between the Sphinx's forepaws, preserving his vision for future generations. The inscription was carved nearly 1,300 years after the Great Sphinx was originally constructed, during Egypt's Old Kingdom, traditionally associated with the reign of King Khafre.

A Powerful Symbol of Royal Legitimacy

Many Egyptologists believe the Dream Stela served not only as a historical record but also as an important piece of royal propaganda.

Since Thutmose IV may not have been the primary heir to the throne, the story of the divine dream presented his kingship as the direct will of the gods. By emphasizing divine approval, the inscription strengthened his political authority and reinforced the sacred nature of the Egyptian monarchy.

Artistic Features of the Dream Stela

The Dream Stela is beautifully carved with symbolic royal imagery.

The relief depicts King Thutmose IV wearing the Blue Crown, standing before the Great Sphinx while making offerings to the sacred monument. Above the scene, hieroglyphic inscriptions praise the king as:

"The Good God, Giver of Life like Ra Forever."

Despite weathering over thousands of years, the monument remains one of the finest surviving examples of New Kingdom royal inscriptions at Giza.

Why Visit the Dream Stela?

Although many visitors focus on the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx itself, the Dream Stela offers an unforgettable glimpse into the beliefs, politics, and spirituality of ancient Egypt.

It tells a timeless story of destiny, ambition, and divine favor while connecting visitors with one of history's most enduring civilizations.

For history lovers, photographers, and archaeology enthusiasts, the Dream Stela is an essential stop during any tour of the Giza Plateau.

Lahun is known as the workers’ village associated with the Pyramid of Senuret II. The Lahun Pyramid is made of mud brick but consists of an arrangement of stone walls in the core.

The stone walls were infilled by mud brick to provide and ensure stability of the brick structure.
What makes the Lahun Pyramid stand out from the rest is the fact that its entrance is located south rather than east of the temple.
The entrance leads to several complicated corridors that surround the burial room uniquely designed in order to trick thieves.
The pyramid sits 48 meters high and the length of the base is 106 meters.

A group of pictures of the Sphinx was published by unknown people who say the Sphinx closed his eyes and was sad.
In response to a common trading Sphinx .. The different angle photography .. goal promotion "trend" sphinx stone statue carved from limestone since 2400 years BC .. Eachd body and features a lion king Khafre revered owner of the second pyramid.
Scientifically, there is no infallible or blind-eyed sculpture. Rather, the ancient Egyptian was keen to highlight the features of the face, especially the eyes, and even perfected their manufacture with the aim of recognizing the soul (ka) on its owner, so it rises again to the eternal world.
(Rarely) and if we find a carving of a person who is blindfolded, then this person was blind in his natural position, and the best evidence is what was found carved in the good tombs of the ancient Egyptian musician.
The rumor about the eyes of the Sphinx is like the curse of the pharaohs and red mercury.. It is not true except for the trend, guys.. Here are some pictures to correct my words. . Greetings to you, Mohamed El Far _ researcher in Egyptian antiquities.

1- Tytus, Preliminary Report; H.E.Winlock, "The work of the Egyptian expedition" BMMA 7,no.10 (October 1912), 184-189.

4- H. E. Winlock, " Excavations at Thebes" 1919-20" BMMA 15, no. 12, ( December 1920), pt 2, p.12.

The most controversial discovery in Egypt!

The golden city of Luxor

No one denies the effort made by the Egyptian mission led by the Egyptian archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass, but some things must be clarified.

This area was the focus of attention of foreign archaeologists since 1888-1889, and Percy Newbery began in 1900 with an attempt to clean the area and remove the debris, then work began again in 1912 - 1920 The Metropolitan Museum mission excavated there and revealed the city for the first time and the most important information published about this golden city Or the lost city:

1- Tytus, Preliminary Report; H.E. Winlock, “The work of the Egyptian expedition,” BMMA 7, No. 10 (October 1912), 184-189.
2- G. Evelyn- White, “The Egyptian expedition 1914-15; II, Excavations at Thebes,” BMMA 10, no.12 (December 1915), 253-256.
3- Ambrose Landing, “Excavations at the palace of Amenhotep III at Thebes,” BMMA 13, no. 3 (March 1918), supplement, pp. 8-14.

4- H. E. Winlock, "Excavations at Thebes" 1919-20 "BMMA 15, No. 12, (December 1920), pt 2, p. 12.

The most wonderful thing is that the city has a vast area near Medinet Habu. Evidence has also been found indicating the worship of the god Aton and that there is a close connection with King Akhenaten and the presence of Akhenaten.

In 1971 - 1977 work was resumed again in the city, and the rest of the city was uncovered by Barry Camp and David O'Connor, two of the most senior scholars around the world .

My sincere greetings to you, Mohamed Elfar, a researcher in Egyptian antiquities.
To see.
